Smarter Golf Starts With Better Motion

How to Fix a Slice in Golf

A slice is one of the most frustrating shot errors for golfers of all skill levels. It sends the ball curving dramatically from left to right for right handed players which makes it difficult to control distance and accuracy. Spine Align Golf offers a clear approach to understanding why slices happen and how to correct them with simple adjustments to your setup and swing mechanics so that you ball begins to travel more out to in for regular shots.

Key Adjustments to Help You Eliminate a Slice

Check Your Alignment

Many golfers unknowingly aim left in an attempt to compensate for a slice. This actually makes the problem worse because it encourages an out to in swing path. Aim your feet, hips and shoulders parallel to the target line to build a more natural path.

Improve Your Takeaway

A slice often begins with an outside takeaway where the club moves away from the body too early. This can be due to an Upright Swing Plane. Focus on your Spine Angle and a straight takeaway, which sets up a more neutral or inside path on the downswing.

Rotate Lower Body Instead of Focusing on Arms

To fix a slice you need proper lower body rotation. When players focus on arms and swing planes rather than proper lower body rotation, they lead themselves down a rabbit hole of changes. Swing plane or arm and hand changes can often encourage a cutting motion across the ball. Focus on hips and legs first!

Shallow the Downswing

A steep downswing almost always produces an out to in path. Work on your Spine Angle, lower body rotation, and proper shoulder turn angle. When these are correct your club will naturally drop slightly behind you as you start down so it will travel from the inside. This helps you deliver the face squarely to the ball.

Release the Club Through Impact

A slice happens when the face fails to rotate back to square. Allow your forearms to naturally rotate through impact and feel the toe of the club passing the heel. This encourages a full release that reduces the open face tendency.

Strengthen Your Grip

A weak grip often leaves the clubface open at impact. Rotate both hands slightly to the right on the grip so you can see more knuckles on the lead hand. This promotes easier face rotation through the ball and helps you square the face. Use a grip trainer to verify that you are in a weak grip position before you make changes!

Choose the Right Ball Position

Having the ball too far forward makes it harder to square the face. Place the ball slightly inside the lead heel for drivers and more centered for irons to help you hit the ball with a square face.
